Which label materials are waterproof?

Film-based label materials such as BOPP, PET, and PP synthetic stocks are inherently waterproof, since they are non-porous plastics that do not absorb moisture. Paper labels can achieve similar water resistance only when laminated with a protective film.

True waterproof performance comes from the base material’s structure: synthetic films like PET and BOPP are impermeable, so water simply beads or runs off the surface without soaking into the material or affecting the printed ink underneath, provided the ink itself is also compatible with wet exposure. Paper, by contrast, is a fibrous material that will absorb water unless a barrier is added, which is why an unlaminated paper label is never truly waterproof regardless of how it is printed.

Lamination extends water resistance to paper labels by sealing a clear film over the printed surface, which protects against surface moisture and light splashing but does not make the underlying paper structure as robust as a genuine film substrate in prolonged wet conditions, such as full submersion or ice-bucket storage. For products that will be regularly wet, refrigerated with condensation, or used in bathrooms and kitchens, specifying a film substrate such as PET or BOPP, paired with a compatible waterproof adhesive, is the more reliable approach than relying on lamination alone.
