What information is generally required on product labels in India?

Regulatory & Compliance 1 min read Updated August 31, 2026

Pre-packaged goods sold in India are generally subject to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 unless a specific exemption or sector-specific regime applies. Core declarations can include the name and address of the manufacturer, packer, or importer; country of origin for imported goods; the common or generic name of the commodity; net quantity; MRP; unit sale price where applicable; consumer-care details; and best-before or use-by information where the commodity can become unfit for use with time.

The exact declarations are not identical for every product. The Legal Metrology Rules contain exemptions and category-specific provisions, and some sectors such as drugs are governed primarily by separate regulatory labelling frameworks. Date declarations, dimensions, quantity expressions, e-commerce display requirements, and other details can also vary by commodity and current amendment status, so a generic checklist should not be treated as universally applicable.

Before artwork is released, the brand should confirm the latest Legal Metrology requirements and any product-specific regulation that applies to the exact commodity, pack size, sales channel, and whether the product is domestic or imported. Non-compliance can lead to enforcement action or the need to correct or withdraw packaging, so this general answer should be treated as an overview rather than legal advice.
