How much can label design influence a customer’s purchase decision?

Label Design & Finishing 2 min read Updated August 31, 2026

Label design can meaningfully influence a purchase decision, particularly for categories where consumers compare similar products on-shelf and decide within seconds, since colour, finish, typography, and overall shelf presence all shape a shopper’s first impression of quality and brand positioning before any other factor is considered.

In categories such as FMCG, cosmetics, and beverages, where several similar products sit side by side, a label’s visual impact often determines which product a shopper picks up first, since most purchase decisions at shelf level are made quickly and are influenced heavily by immediate visual cues rather than a detailed read of the packaging. Colour contrast, print clarity, and finishing techniques such as foil stamping or embossing all contribute to how premium or trustworthy a product appears, independent of the product’s actual quality.

That said, label design is one factor among several, including price, brand familiarity, and the product itself, and its relative influence varies by category: a well-known, trusted brand may rely less on label design to drive a purchase than a new entrant trying to stand out for the first time. Design also interacts with practical label choices, since a self-adhesive label offers different design possibilities than a full-body shrink sleeve, and finishing decisions should align with the price positioning of the product rather than being chosen for maximum visual impact regardless of cost, since an over-finished label on a budget product can create a mismatched impression as easily as an under-finished label on a premium one.
