Why do labels bubble or wrinkle after application?
Labels bubble or wrinkle after application mainly due to trapped air during application, incorrect application angle on a curved surface, humidity-driven expansion of a paper face stock, or a label design that was not properly corrected for the container’s shape before application.
Trapped air is the most direct cause of bubbling: if the label is not applied with even, progressive pressure from one edge to the other, pockets of air can become sealed beneath the surface, visible as raised bubbles that may flatten with pressure or remain permanently, depending on how much air is trapped and how flexible the face material is. On curved containers, applying a flat label without accounting for the curvature can force the material to wrinkle as it tries to conform to a shape it was not designed for, particularly on tighter curves or compound shapes.
Paper face stocks add a further variable, since paper can absorb ambient moisture and expand slightly after application, especially in humid environments, creating internal stress that shows as wrinkling if the adhesive bond is not strong enough to hold the material flat as it tries to move. This is one reason film substrates like BOPP or PET, which do not absorb moisture the way paper does, tend to wrinkle less over time in humid conditions. For shrink sleeves specifically, wrinkling after the heat-shrink process usually points to uneven heat distribution in the shrink tunnel or a shrink ratio mismatch between the film and the container shape, which is a separate issue from adhesive-based labels.
