Self-adhesive labels can be waterproof or moisture-resistant depending on the face material, adhesive, ink, and lamination used. Film-based substrates such as PET or synthetic PP generally resist water far better than uncoated paper labels, which absorb moisture and can wrinkle, smear, or lift.

Paper face stocks are porous by nature, so an uncoated paper label exposed to water will absorb moisture, and unlaminated ink can smudge. A gloss or matte lamination film applied over the print seals the surface and significantly improves water resistance even on a paper label. True film substrates, such as PET or PP synthetic stock, are inherently non-porous and hold up well in wet or humid environments without needing lamination.

The adhesive layer matters as much as the face stock. A standard acrylic adhesive can lose tack if water gets underneath the label edge, while adhesives formulated for wet or refrigerated conditions maintain bond strength even with surface condensation. For products stored in coolers, ice buckets, or humid warehouses, brands should specify a moisture-resistant film label with a cold-temperature or wet-strength adhesive rather than assume any self-adhesive label will perform the same way. A label manufacturer can recommend the appropriate material and adhesive after evaluating the container surface, application environment, and expected product lifecycle.
