Each finishing technique is typically applied as a distinct production step after the base printing is complete: foil stamping uses heat and pressure to transfer a thin metallic or pigmented film onto specific areas of the design, embossing uses a die to physically raise a defined area of the label surface, and spot UV varnish applies a glossy, raised coating selectively over chosen design elements to create contrast against a matte background. Because these are separate processes, they can be layered on the same label, with foil-emboss being a particularly common combination that gives a metallic finish extra dimensional depth by having the foiled area also stand slightly proud of the surface.

Combining multiple finishes increases both production complexity and cost, since each technique requires its own tooling, typically a custom die or plate matched to the specific design area being finished, and adds a separate pass through the finishing process. The design itself also needs to account for how these techniques interact, since very fine detail can be harder to foil or emboss cleanly than bolder shapes, and a pre-press or design consultation with the manufacturer before finalising artwork helps ensure the intended combination of finishes will reproduce as expected on the chosen substrate.
