Label wrinkles during application can be prevented by ensuring correct application pressure and angle, matching the label design to the container’s actual curvature, using properly calibrated labelling equipment, and selecting a face material with enough flexibility to conform to the container shape without stress.

Application technique is the first line of defence: applying a label with steady, progressive pressure from one edge across to the other, rather than pressing the centre down first, allows air to be pushed out ahead of the bonding line rather than becoming trapped and causing bubbling that can lead to wrinkling as the trapped air redistributes. On automated lines, this means the labelling machine’s applicator pressure, speed, and wiping mechanism need to be correctly calibrated for the specific label and container combination rather than left at a generic default setting.

Design and material selection also play a preventive role: a label designed with the container’s actual curvature in mind, rather than assuming a flat surface, reduces the mechanical stress the material needs to absorb during application, and film face stocks generally handle curved application with less wrinkling than paper, since they do not have paper’s tendency to expand or contract with humidity after application. For containers with particularly challenging curves or contours, testing the label on the actual container before committing to a full production run, and adjusting die-cut shape or material if wrinkling appears during that test, is more reliable than assuming a standard label design will apply cleanly.
