What are self-adhesive labels and how do they work?
A self-adhesive label is a label pre-coated with adhesive and backed by a silicone release liner. Peeling the liner away exposes the adhesive, so the label bonds to a surface under light pressure alone, with no water, glue, or heat needed. This construction is also called a pressure-sensitive label.
The construction has three layers: a face stock (paper, PP, PET, or foil) carrying the print; an adhesive coating (permanent, removable, or repositionable); and a siliconised release liner that protects the adhesive until application. Because the adhesive is already active, labels can be applied by hand or dispensed at high speed on automatic labelling machines, which is why self-adhesive is the default label format for FMCG, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and industrial packaging.
Die-cutting allows any shape, from simple rectangles to multi-panel or contour cuts around a bottle neck. Print methods include flexographic, digital, and screen printing, and finishes such as lamination, foil stamping, and embossing can be added on top. The adhesive chemistry (acrylic, rubber-based, or hot-melt) is selected according to the surface it needs to bond to and the environment the product will face, which is why self-adhesive labels perform differently on glass versus low-surface-energy plastics such as HDPE.
