What is a shrink sleeve and how does it work?
A shrink sleeve is a tube of printed plastic film that is slipped over a container and then exposed to heat, causing the film to shrink and conform tightly to the container’s shape. Unlike a self-adhesive label, it uses no adhesive at all and can cover the entire container surface.
Shrink sleeve film is printed flat, formed and seamed into a tube slightly larger than the container, then applied and shrunk with steam or hot air. Common sleeve materials include PETG, PVC, OPS, and purpose-designed polyolefin films. Standard full-body shrink sleeves are typically engineered to shrink predominantly in the transverse direction around the container circumference, while machine-direction change is controlled according to the film construction.
Because there is no adhesive, sleeves apply cleanly to glass, PET, HDPE, and metal without surface preparation, and a perforated tear line can be built in for easy consumer removal and, on caps, for tamper evidence. This construction is what allows shrink sleeves to deliver full 360-degree graphic coverage, including printing over the shoulder of a bottle, which is why brands use them when maximum shelf impact or complex container geometry is the priority.
