Which label adhesive works well on HDPE containers?

HDPE containers need an adhesive specifically formulated for low-surface-energy plastics, since standard acrylic adhesives designed for glass or metal often struggle to bond and wet out properly on HDPE’s naturally low-energy surface, leading to edge lifting over time.

HDPE (high-density polyethylene) has a lower surface energy than glass, metal, or even other plastics like PET, meaning liquid adhesive has more difficulty spreading evenly across the surface to create full contact. Adhesives engineered specifically for low-surface-energy plastics use different polymer formulations that wet out and grip HDPE more effectively than a general-purpose acrylic adhesive, reducing the risk of edges lifting or the label detaching entirely, particularly after temperature cycling or handling stress.

Surface preparation also plays a role: HDPE containers, especially those with any mould-release residue from manufacturing, benefit from clean, dry surfaces at the point of labelling, since any residual contamination compounds the inherent low-surface-energy challenge. For HDPE jerry cans and industrial containers that will also face outdoor UV exposure or chemical contact, the adhesive should additionally be rated for those conditions, since a low-surface-energy adhesive alone does not guarantee UV or chemical resistance unless specifically formulated for both.
