Why do labels lift at the edges after application?

Labels lift at the edges after application most commonly due to insufficient adhesive contact at the perimeter, often from a curved or textured surface, low application pressure, an adhesive mismatched to the substrate, or trapped air pushing outward from the centre of the label toward the edges during application.

Edge lift often starts with how the label was applied: if the application pressure was too light, or the roller or applicator did not press the label edges down as firmly as the centre, the perimeter bond is weaker from the outset and more susceptible to lifting once the product is handled. On curved or contoured containers, the label’s edges are under more mechanical stress than the flat centre section, since the material is trying to conform to the curvature, which puts extra strain precisely where the bond is often already weakest.

Trapped air is another common contributor: if air becomes trapped under the label during application, it tends to migrate toward the edges as the product is handled or as temperature changes cause slight expansion, gradually pushing the edge up and away from the surface. An adhesive that is simply undersized for the substrate’s surface energy, as is common with plastic containers, compounds all of these factors, since there is less margin for error at the edges when the base bond strength is already marginal. Addressing edge lift usually starts by checking application pressure and technique before assuming the adhesive itself needs to change.
