Which labels are resistant to oil, moisture, and chemicals?
Film-based labels such as PET, BOPP, and specialised polyester stocks, combined with a chemical-resistant adhesive, generally offer the best resistance to oil, moisture, and chemical exposure, since these substrates do not absorb liquids the way paper does and can be formulated to withstand solvent contact.
Paper labels, even when laminated, generally underperform film substrates when exposed to oils and solvents, since laminate films can be compromised by certain chemicals over prolonged contact, and any breach in the laminate exposes the absorbent paper beneath. Synthetic film labels are the more robust choice for products like automotive lubricants, industrial chemicals, and agrochemicals, where the container surface itself may also be splashed with the product’s contents during handling.
The adhesive needs equal attention: a chemical-resistant adhesive maintains its bond even when in contact with solvents, oils, or aggressive cleaning agents, whereas a standard adhesive can soften or fail under sustained chemical exposure. For products where oil or chemical contact is expected as part of normal handling, such as automotive workshop products or paint containers, specifying both a resistant film and a matched adhesive, and ideally testing the combination against the specific chemicals the product will actually contact, gives more reliable performance than assuming a generic film label will suffice.
