What is variable data printing and where is it used?

Variable data printing, or VDP, changes selected content such as a serial number, QR code, barcode, batch code, name, or promotional message from one label to the next while the main design remains consistent. The variable element may be printed directly on a digital press or added by an inline or offline variable-marking system to labels produced by a conventional printing process.

A VDP workflow merges a base design with data from a controlled database or code-generation system. Fully digital presses can print both the static and variable content in one pass, while flexographically printed labels can receive unique data through integrated inkjet, thermal inkjet, laser, or other coding equipment. The key requirement is that each variable record is generated, printed, verified, and reconciled correctly.

VDP is widely used for security and track-and-trace labels, promotional codes, batch or lot information, regional variants, and personalisation. For serialisation, the printing or marking system is only one part of the solution; code management, barcode or QR verification, duplicate prevention, database integration, and audit records can be equally important depending on the programme.
