What is a serialized QR code label?
A serialised QR code label is a label printed with a unique QR code on every individual unit, rather than one shared code across an entire batch, using variable data printing so each label can be scanned, tracked, and verified as a distinct item throughout the supply chain.
Unlike a standard product QR code, which typically links to the same webpage or information regardless of which unit is scanned, a serialised QR code encodes a unique identifier tied to that specific label or product unit in a database. This enables item-level track-and-trace, meaning the brand can record when and where that specific unit was produced, packed, shipped, and, potentially, first scanned by a distributor or consumer.
For consumers, scanning a serialised QR code typically opens a verification portal that confirms the product is genuine and may show basic information about its origin or batch. For brands, the underlying database can flag anomalies such as the same code being scanned an implausible number of times or from unexpected geographic locations, both of which can indicate counterfeit copies of a genuine code circulating in the market. Producing serialised labels requires variable data printing capability integrated with a code-management system, since each label file must be uniquely generated rather than a single repeated design.
