Are wet glue labels cost-effective for high-volume production?

Wet Glue Labels 1 min read Updated September 2, 2026

Yes, wet glue labels are generally one of the most cost-effective label formats at high production volumes, because they avoid the adhesive coating and release-liner materials used in self-adhesive labels and are well matched to the high-speed automated bottling lines common in liquor and beverage production.

The main cost advantage comes from the simplified material structure: wet glue labels are plain printed paper, with no adhesive layer or liner to manufacture, ship, and dispose of. This reduces material cost per label and eliminates liner waste on the production line, which can be a meaningful saving at high volumes. Wet glue labelling machines are also designed for very high line speeds, which suits large-scale distilleries, breweries, and wineries running continuous bottling operations.

The trade-off is that wet glue requires dedicated wet-glue application equipment rather than the standard pressure-sensitive labellers used for self-adhesive formats, so it is not necessarily the most cost-effective choice for a brand without that equipment already installed, or for shorter, more frequently changing production runs where self-adhesive’s faster changeover and lower equipment investment may be more economical overall. For an established high-volume glass bottling operation, however, wet glue typically offers the lowest per-unit label cost among the major label formats.
