What causes wet glue labels to wrinkle or bubble after application?
Wet glue labels can wrinkle or bubble when adhesive is applied unevenly, too much glue is used, air becomes trapped beneath the label, the paper absorbs excessive moisture, or the label does not conform correctly to the container surface.
Container geometry is another common factor. A label designed for a straight cylindrical bottle may wrinkle when applied to a tapered or compound-curved surface because the flat paper cannot conform evenly. Dirty, wet, oily, or contaminated glass can further interfere with uniform bonding.
The solution is not simply to use more adhesive. Paper characteristics, glue formulation, glue quantity, bottle cleanliness, label dimensions, machine settings, application pressure, and storage conditions should be evaluated as one system when diagnosing wrinkling or bubbling.
