Are wet glue labels waterproof or water-resistant?
Wet glue labels are not automatically waterproof, but they can be engineered for good moisture resistance by combining a suitable wet-strength paper with the correct adhesive and printing or finishing system.
Standard paper can absorb moisture when exposed to condensation, refrigeration, or direct water contact, potentially causing wrinkling, softening, or loss of adhesion. Wet-strength papers are designed to retain more of their structural integrity when damp and are therefore commonly used for chilled beverage applications.
The required construction should be selected according to the product’s actual environment. A bottle stored on a dry retail shelf has very different requirements from beer, wine, or spirits exposed to refrigeration, condensation, or an ice bucket. The complete paper, ink, coating, adhesive, and bottle system should be tested under realistic conditions.
