Standard uncoated paper absorbs moisture and can soften, wrinkle, or lose adhesion when repeatedly exposed to condensation or direct contact with ice, which is why beer, wine, and premium spirit brands regularly served chilled or in ice buckets typically specify glassine, a translucent, moisture-resistant paper grade specifically developed for this environment, or another wet-strength stock rather than standard label paper. This applies to both wet glue and self-adhesive formats, since the underlying paper vulnerability is the same regardless of how the label is applied.

For self-adhesive labels facing refrigeration specifically, the adhesive itself also needs attention beyond the face material, since standard adhesives lose tack at low temperatures; a cold-temperature or freezer-grade adhesive maintains bond strength through the temperature cycling that occurs as a bottle moves between refrigeration and room-temperature service or display. Film-based label substrates such as BOPP or PET provide an alternative path to moisture resistance without needing a specialised paper grade, since these films do not absorb water in the way paper does, though this trades off some of the tactile, premium paper feel that many liquor brands specifically want to convey.
