What is the best label material for oil, lubricant, and paint containers?

Industry-Specific Packaging Guides 1 min read Updated October 3, 2026

Film materials such as PET or other suitably specified synthetic films are generally preferred for oil, lubricant, paint, and industrial chemical containers because they offer better resistance to moisture, oil, solvents, and abrasion than standard paper labels.

The adhesive is equally important. HDPE lubricant bottles, metal paint cans, and industrial containers present different surface characteristics, and the label may also be exposed to product spills or chemicals during filling, transport, and use. A chemically resistant face material can still fail if the adhesive underneath is incompatible with the container or product.

Protective laminates or coatings can further protect inks and printed information. The final construction should therefore be selected after identifying the container material, surface texture, chemicals involved, storage environment, and expected product life.
